Iva “Penny” Petermeier, 85, of Baxter, died on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at Park Centre in Newton.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany United Church of Christ in Baxter. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials to the Bethany United Church of Christ or in Penny’s name to be used for a scholarship fund may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.

Iva, the daughter of Arthur and Emily (Brandow) Penrod, was born on Aug. 6, 1928, in Des Moines. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1946. Iva was united in marriage with Kenneth John Petermeier on July 7, 1951, at the Zoar Church in rural Newton. They were blessed with three children: Craig, Debra and Carey. In 1979, Iva graduated from nursing school in Marshalltown, receiving her LPN. She worked at Skiff Medical Center and Baxter Nursing Home. She was a member of the Bethany UCC Church, Eastern Star, Nazareth White Shrine where she served as High Priestess, Rebecca Lodge 237, State and National Grange, PTA in Newton and Baxter, serving as President at Woodrow Wilson and Baxter, Baxter Garden Club and the Baxter Ever Ready Club. She enjoyed her coffee and card clubs and had bowled for many years.

Those left to honor Penny’s memory are her children, Craig (Virginia) Petermeier, Debra (Randy) Krampe and Carey (Jill) Petermeier, all of Baxter; grandchildren, Kyle (Abbey), Lindsay (Colby) JC, Mackenzie, Megan (Steven) and Cameron; two great-grandchildren, Kaylyn and Kamdyn; siblings, Leonard, Bob, Ed, Marvis, O’Wanda and Pam; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1977; and siblings, Richard, Clifford, Willard, Juanita and Ramona. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.
