James F. Wilson

The death of Mr. Wilson was briefly chronicled yesterday evening. He was born in Henderson County, N. J. January 20, 1823. Came to Iowa in 1847 and settled on the farm seven miles west of Pella. No Pella, Newton or any of these towns here then. All a wild and unsettled country. In 1847 he was married to Elizabeth Fitzgerald in Red Rock, Iowa, and to them were born fourteen children. Eight of these are still living, those living here being J. T. Wilson, Mrs. Ed Scarborough and L. O. Wilson. The others are in various parts of the country.

Mr. Wilson died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Scarborough, where he and Mrs. Wilson have been tenderly cared for in their declining days. Mrs. Wilson still survives but has been a helpless invalid for the past three years. Mr. Wilson’s only regret as the end drew near was that he would no longer be permitted to minister to the comfort of his faithful companion, with whom for fifty-six years he had journeyed.

Mr. Wilson had for fifty years been a member of the Christian Church and had for forty years been a member of the Masonic Order. He was one of the tried and true men of his day, faithful and conscientious.

The funeral will be held Saturday morning at ten o’clock from the Scarborough residence, Revs. Leake and Smith officiating. The Masonic Order will have charge of the services. ~ The Newton News, Wednesday, December 23, 1903, page 1, Column 2
