Clinton Henry Gifford Sr., the son of Henry Daniel and Ginnie Marie (Scarbrough) Gifford, was born Feb. 4, 1929, in rural Killduff, Iowa. He graduated from the Kellogg Senior High School in 1948.
On June 3, 1951, Clinton was united in marriage with Arlene Sharp. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the Maytag Company in Newton, retiring from the machine shop after 36 years. Clinton enjoyed farming, St. Louis Cardinal baseball, his John Deere tractor, gardening and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Clinton died on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was 84 years old. Clinton was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Debra Breeden; and four sisters, Jessie (Orville) Murphy, Valeta (Wayne) Van Dalen, Virginia (Keith) Kleinendorst and Grace (Fred) Mackerman.
Those left to honor Clinton’s memory include his wife, Arlene Gifford of Kellogg, Iowa; his sons, Clinton H. “Biff” Gifford Jr. of Sully, Iowa, Kevin Gifford of Newton, Iowa, and Curtis (Cheryl) Gifford of Des Moines, Iowa; a son-in-law, Kevin Breeden of Grinnell, Iowa; his grandchildren, Whitney Gifford, Kellie Gifford, Corey Gifford, Christopher Gifford, Courtney Gifford, Elizabeth (Brad) Rozendaal, Nathan Gifford (Aleah Maggard) and Zachary Gifford; his step-grandchildren, Ryan Funk and Brandon Funk; his great-grandchildren, Peyton Rozendaal, Lane Rozendaal and Allie Gifford; his sister, Wyonne (Gene) Sylvester; and his brother, Vernon (Doris) Gifford.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
