T. R. Phillips, who had been failing for some months and for the past week had failed rapidly, at last succumbed yesterday at 5 p.m.

Deceased was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, on Dec. 22, 1833, and was therefore in his seventieth year.

In 1864 he removed to Jasper County and enlisted soon after in the war, serving sixteen months in the Ninety-Sixth Ohio Infantry. Returning from the war he worked on a farm until 1883, when he removed to Newton, engaging successively in the livery business, agricultural implements and selling marble monuments.

Fourteen years ago he was elected marshal of Newton, which office he has held all the time since, doing his work so faithfully and reliably that he has won a position in the history of the municipality as the best marshal Newton ever had.

Mr. Phillips was married Nov. 9, 1856, to Harriet R. Allfree, four children, two boys and two girls being the fruit of the union, the youngest daughter, Mrs. Downs, of Wichita, having preceded the father to the grave. The remainder of the children are Edward of Newton, Arthur of Chicago and Mrs. Ella Bewyer of Newton.

Mr. Phillips was highly respected in public and private life, was a kind husband and father and in every way an exemplary citizen. His loss will be keenly felt.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock in the M. E. Church. The sermon will be preached by Rev. John Ferguson, who will be assisted by Revs. Tuttle and Smith. The members of the City Council will act as pallbearers.
