Joseph F. Anderson, 61, of Arlington, Va., died suddenly on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013.

Beloved husband of Catherine E. Deutsch-Anderson, formerly of Newton, he was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Joseph F. Anderson Sr. and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Jeanne Anderson of Philadelphia Ridley Park, Pa.; his sisters, Jeanne Jones, Sue Mierzejewski, Sharon DeStefano and Noreen Collins; his brother, Robert Anderson; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended cousins, family and friends.

He also was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mrs. M. Hortense Deutsch.

Joe entered and completed his degree program at the University of Notre Dame, Southbend, Ind., following preparatory schooling at the Archmere Academy, Claymont, Del. After graduation from ND, Joe spent the majority of a 31-year Federal Civil Service career in dedicated support to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he used his special skills in security design and where he received special recognition for his role in responding to the 9/11 crisis of 2001. A former Notre Dame lacrosse player, Joseph continued to play club lacrosse throughout his adult life in the Washington, D.C., area. An avid sports enthusiast, who lived life to the fullest, he enjoyed horseback riding, hiking, cheering for Notre Dame sports teams and participating in military war re-enactments.

A mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, 3901 North Cathedral Lane in Arlington, Va. Interment to be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Newton, Iowa, at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7.
