Old Resident of Monroe Dead

Simeon Zerley, a prominent citizen of Monroe for the past thirty-one years, died quite suddenly at his home about nine o’clock Tuesday morning, from a stroke of paralysis – the second stroke within three years. Mr. Zerley was seventy-two years of age, had been a member of the Baptist Church for forty-two years and an active worker in Masonic circles. His wife died a few years ago. He leaves five children to mourn the loss of a good father: Mrs. H. L. Husted, Mrs. D. P. Edmund, and Wm. Zerley of Monroe, Mrs. Widner of Atlantic and Mrs. Merritt of Des Moines. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Monroe, yesterday. Revs. Mills and Helmick officiating. The interment was by the Masonic Fraternity. ~ The Newton Record, Thursday, July 27, 1899, Page 1, Column 3
