ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
Mr. Wm S. Hixson, one of the oldest and best [known] citizens of Jasper county died at his home in Hixson’s Grove, last Thursday afternoon, from a stroke of apoplexy, after an illness of nearly two weeks.
Deceased was a native of Highland County, Ohio, and was born on the 31st day of August, 1835. He has resided in Jasper County since 1851, coming here with his parents from Randolph County, Virginia.
He was united in marriage with Miss Phoebe E. Likens (sic), on the 9th day of July, 1854, Jesse Rickman, then county Judge, performing the ceremony. Twelve children blessed their union, nine of whom survive.
In his 22nd year he was converted and united with the M.E. Church, and remained a faithful and consistent member of the same until his death, when the Master called him home to his reward.
The bereaved widow and fatherless children have the sympathy of all. The great grief that has come to them has also carried grief to the hearts of the neighbors and friends, who had known him intimately during all these years.
The funeral occurred on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. I.O. Kemble, and the remains laid to rest in the Hixson Grove Cemetery.
The family desires us to return thanks to the friends and neighbors, and all who showed them so much sympathy and kindness in their affliction and to the M.E. choir which furnished sweet and appropriate music at the funeral.
