Manly Shank, 87, of Kellogg died on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Garden in Marshalltown. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday, and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.

Manly A. Shank, 87, of Kellogg died December 31, 2012, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Teacher Dena Hall, Christ Community Church in Indianola, officiating. Pallbearers will be Mike Boseck, Daryl DeBrower, John Hall, Phil Pickett, Donnie Ross, Jr. and Russell Shank. Honorary bearers will be Brian Lewis and Rick Trotter. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 Wednesday, January 2, at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Manly A. Shank Memorial Fund.

Manly was born August 8, 1925, in Marshall County, Iowa, the son of Russell and Mildred Patterson Shank. He was raised on the family farm near Rock Creek Lake, Jasper County and attended a country school near his home.

He was united in marriage to Lois L. Arment February 10, 1945, in Marshalltown. The couple lived in Jasper County prior to moving to Marshalltown in 1951. The couple later moved to their farm near Rock Creek Lake in 1972. Manly farmed for many years and for 47 years was employed as a machinist at Fisher Governor in Marshalltown. He retired in 1997.

Manly loved his family dearly and was very protective of their well-being. He was considered a Good Samaritan and never hesitated in helping others. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, trap shooting, listening to country music and dancing.

Survivors include three children, Tim (Shirley) Shank of Deep River, Sherry Everett of Grinnell and John Shank of Kellogg; two sisters, Bonnie LaGouri of Mesquite, Nevada and Evalee Morrin of Benton, Arkansas; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois in 1999; two sisters, Lenora Winders and Shirley Cranfill; two brothers, Marvin and Laverne Shank; and a grandchild. ~ The Smith Funeral Home Website, Grinnell, Iowa.
