John T. Hayes
1. The Newton (IA) Daily Herald, Saturday, July 5, 1902
Page 1, Column 1After a brave fight of many months against disease, even leaving home and seeking health in different health resorts, and at last coming home with a mark of death upon his face, to pass his last hours with his loved ones, the loyal spirit of John T. Hayes departed to eternal rest, as he conscientiously believed. He died Thursday, June 28, 1902.
He was born near Vandalia, Iowa, April 15, 1851. His age was therefore 51 years, 3 months and 13 days. He had lived his life in the same locality, had scores of friends who knew him from boyhood, and his life was an open book. He had no enemies, for although different from his neighbors and friends on many points of religion and politics, these friends knew his sincerity and respected his opinions, without bitterness. A life-long Democrat, he has held the office of assessor in Des Moines Township almost continuously for over 15 years, and it is doubtful if any other man of his political faith could have done this in this Republican township.
John had no fear of death. He regarded it as the final end of care; as a sleep, everlasting sleep. His religion was the love of man. – Prairie City News.
