Joachim Griebel
The Newton (IA) Daily Herald, Tuesday, August 5, 1902
Page 4, Column 3Last Saturday Joachim Griebel, who lived with his son Fred in Malaka Township, went down to the cemetery of the German Reform Church near the house with his daughter-in-law and another relative to mow the family burial plot.
After the old gentleman had cleaned the grass from the grave of his wife, he told those who accompanied him that he was too hot and worn out to continue the work and that he would go to the house and rest.
While the younger Griebels were finishing the work a gentleman drove down to the cemetery and told them that someone was in the road and that his horses would not go by. At once they thought of Grandpa and when they reached his side he was stone dead.
The cause of death was assigned as heart failure, deceased being 76 years of age and too old for hot work on a hot day. Deceased leaves three sons, Fred, Chris and Earnest, and considerable property in Sherman Township, where he lived up to two years ago. The funeral was held this forenoon at eleven o’clock and the body interred on the spot he had been engaged in mowing.
