Lloyd Irving Versteegh, 89, of Newton passed away Monday evening, Oct. 8, 2012, at Newton Health Care under the care of Skiff Hospice.

A funeral service for Lloyd will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are being designated in Lloyd’s name or to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League, and may be left at the funeral home.

Lloyd, the son of Samuel Leo and Caroline Leota (Irish) Versteegh, was born March 2, 1923, near Sully. He attended the Newton Senior High School. Lloyd served his country during World War II, with the U.S. Merchant Marines.

On Nov. 9, 1942, Lloyd was united in marriage with Norma Jean Marsh in Missouri. A lifetime resident of the Newton area, he was past owner of Versteegh Sanitary Service, retired. He had devoted his life to his family, neighbors and friends. Lloyd was a kind and warm hearted gentleman, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. He enjoyed gardening, boating and was a pilot, owning several airplanes over the years.

Those left to honor Lloyd’s memory include his son and daughter-in-law, Mike “Luke” and Rhonda Versteegh of Newton; his grandsons, Jordy and James; his granddaughters, Riley and Lindsey; his two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Halli; a brother, Leo E. (Delores) Versteegh of Newton; his nieces and nephew; and his many friends.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma Jean, on Aug. 20, 2010; his son, Lee Versteegh; his brothers, Robert and Dale; and a nephew, David.
