Mrs. Margaret M. Smith, who had for several months been suffering from cancer of the stomach, died at her home in the east part of the city Monday evening at 6 o’clock.

She was born June 9, 1827, in Jacksonville, Ill. Was married to G. W. Smith in 1844 and came to this county in 1861, moving to Newton a year later. Mr. Smith was a soldier of the Fortieth Iowa and second lieutenant of Company D. He died at Little Rock, Ark., in 1864, while in the service of his country.

There are four children left to mourn the loss of a good mother. They are Mrs. Melissa Burnham of this city, Newton Smith of Knoxville, Mrs. Sadie Philes of Winterset and Will E. Smith of Newburg.

Mrs. Smith had for years been a member of the Congregational Church and the funeral was held there at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. W. Cowan. The Women’s Relief Corps attended in a body.
