A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church, 210 N. Second Ave. E. in Newton.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home, 1115 E. 19th St. N. in Newton.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Eastern Star Training Awards for Religious Leadership (ESTARL) may be left at the church on the morning of the service, or they may be left at the funeral home. Memorials also may be mailed to the funeral home; please add “Attn: Paschal Family” on the envelope.
Leona was born on Aug. 30, 1918, in Oralabor, Iowa, to Walter Peter and Grace Mae (Davis) Portugal. She graduated from Newton High School in 1935 and she then attended Buddington Memorial Bible School in Chicago, Ill., and the Drake Secretarial College in Jersey City, NJ. Leona married Harold D. “Pete” Paschal on May 2, 1945, in Newton, Iowa.
Leona was a member of the First United Methodist Church, National Security Women’s Corps, New Jersey, 1942-1944. She was a past president of the Washington School P.T.A.; past Bluebird leader; past leader of the Sherman Sunbeams 4-H Club; Skiff Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary; past president of the American Legion Auxiliary; past Mother Advisor of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls; past Matron of Newton Chapter No. 100, Order of the Eastern Star; past Worthy Grand Matron of Grand Chapter of Iowa, Order of the Eastern Star from 1973-1974; General Grand Chapter Committee Member, Order of the Eastern Star 1982-1985; and Daughters of the Nile.
Leona is survived by her two daughters, Karen A. Paschal of Omaha, Neb., and Candace P. (John) Lattyak of Gilroy, Calif.; four grandchildren, Rebecca A. Burdett (Juan de Diego Perea del Pino) of Campbell, Calif., Sarah K. Burdett (Neel Mukherjee) of Berlin, Germany, Grace K. Lattyak of San Francisco, Calif., and Nathan J. Lattyak (fiancée, Jamie Belknap) of San Jose, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Lucia Perea and Diego Perea of Campbell, Calif., and Inara Burdett-Mukherjee of Berlin, Germany; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceeded in death by her parents; husband, Harold D. “Pete”; son, Larry; grandson, Mark Paschal Burdett; and three brothers, Othmel W., Roy W. and Walter Carl Portugal. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Sept 5, 2012.
