James Sawvel

James Herbert Sawvel, 83, of Newton, Iowa, died Aug. 12, 2012, at Park Centre in Newton, Iowa.

He was born Feb. 9, 1929, in Mystic, Iowa, to Lester V. and Mildred K. McCarty Sawvel. He graduated from Moravia High School in 1947 and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. James worked at Maytag in Newton.

He is survived by four sisters, Louise (JR) Hoyer of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Patricia England of San Diego, California, Mildred (Richard) Harris of Gladwin, Michigan, Janice Sheets of Iowa City, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Keith Sawvel; and a niece, Kimberly Stanley-Dias.

A graveside service with burial of the cremains will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa, with Pastor Jack Knox officiating. Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield will perform graveside military rites. No visitation is planned.
