Bernard D. Lindsey, 87, of Newton died on Monday, August 6, 2012 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be 6:30 p.m., Thursday, August 9, 2012, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

The family will greet friends from 5 p.m., until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Immanuel Baptist Church may be left at the funeral home. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Lindsey Family on the envelope

Survivors include his wife, Julia of Newton; son, Bernard (Beth Ann) Lindsey, Jr. of Calamus, Iowa; daughter, Lynda (Gerry) Vanden Hoek of Brentwood, Missouri; his five grandchildren, Brittney (Andrew) Switala of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Bryan (Samantha) Vanden Hoek of Ozark, Missouri, Jeff (Melinda) Vanden Hoek of Dallas, Texas, Chris Vanden Hoek of Houston, Texas and his fiancée, Catalina Nicolescu and Steve (Beth) Vanden Hoek of St. Louis, Missouri; fifteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, his sister, Sylvia Grooms of Ottumwa; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.

Funeral Service: 6:30 p.m., Thursday, August 09, 2012 at the funeral home. Military Honors by the American Legion Post 111 of Newton.
Interment: Private Family Burial on Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Those left to honor Bernard's memory are his wife of 66 years, Julia of Newton; son, Bernard (Beth Ann) Lindsey, Jr. of Calamus, Iowa; daughter, Lynda (Gerry) Vanden Hoek of Brentwood, Missouri; his five grandchildren, Brittney (Andrew) Switala of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Bryan (Samanatha) Vanden Hoek of Ozark, Missouri, Jeff (Melinda) Vanden Hoek of Dallas, Texas, Chris Vanden Hoek of Houston, Texas and his fiancée, Catalina Nicolescu and Steve (Beth) Vanden Hoek of St. Louis, Missouri; fifteen great-grandchildren, his two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Sylvia Grooms of Ottumwa; many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and a sister.

Bernard served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps, serving during WW II in the South Pacific.

Bernard was a graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1943.

Bernard was a mail carrier for the Newton Post Office for many years. He had also been a plumber and pipe fitter for the Maytag Company for several years. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton where he had served as a Sunday school teacher. Bernard enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching all sports and woodworking.
