William Scott “Bill” Smith, 91, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. A service in celebration of his life will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road in Davenport, with Pastor Sue Houseman officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill., where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #26. Memorials may be made to the Veterans’ Administration.
Bill was born in 1920 in Clark, Mo., to Lovell and Zora Smith. The family later moved to Newton, Iowa, where Bill met the love of his life, Wanda Hickman, and began a relationship that would last more than 70 years.
Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served in North Africa with the Army Air Corps 26th Air Depot for four years to include campaigns against Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. In 1944, upon his return home, he married his beloved wife Wanda in Kansas City, Mo.
Bill worked as an electrician at the Rock Island Arsenal Communications and M.O.P. shop until his retirement in 1980. Bill’s joys in life included fishing, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, playing cards, crossword puzzles and reading. Bill was a member of the Bettendorf Senior Citizens.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Wanda and the three children with whom they were blessed, Mary Lou Coon, David Smith and Linda (Bill) Weatherly; grandchildren, Carlton “Cart” Coon (Kristin), Ryan (Sarah) Coon, Sarai Fenton, Jessica (Jeff) Stiles, Dustin Smith, Dave (Brooke) Smith; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary White of California.
Bill is loved and will be missed by all.
