Terpstra, Sylviana – 1940-2011

Sylviana Terpstra, the daughter of Cresse Benjamin Copenhaver, was born Aug. 28, 1940. She graduated from the Newton Senior High School with the class of 1958 and was active as a flutist in the band and orchestra. Sylvania was confirmed in the Lutheran Church.
Sylviana was united in marriage with Paul Chapman. They were married for 20 years. Sylviana had worked for the Seigers and Bedell Law Firm in Newton for 20 years, had been the owner/operator of Banes Restaurant and the West End Lounge and worked for Crouse Cartage Trucking, Whirlpool and H&R Block. Sylviana later married to John Terpstra. She loved spending time with her family. Sylvania enjoyed flower gardening, reading, and being with her high school girlfriends. She was a member of the Newton Moose Lodge and the Pink Ribbon Support Group.
Sylviana died on Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at the Skiff Hospice Monarch Wing in Newton, Iowa. She was 71 years old. Sylviana was preceded in death by her mother and step-father; her husband John; her grandparents, Anna P. Benjamin, Anna Kristina Benjamin and William Benjamin.
Those left to honor Sylviana’s memory include her daughter, Sandra Younger of Newton; her son, Douglas Wayne Chapman of Newton; her grandson, Travis Howerton; and her many friends.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be designated in her name ad may be left at the funeral home.
