Death of Mrs. Jennie Seymour

After a long absence from Newton where she had spent so many happy years, Mrs. Jennie Seymour had planned, so we have been told, to return to our town this spring, (Illegible) her former home place and there live for the rest of her days on earth. She has returned to us, but not in the way she had planned. And instead of the busy, eager, woman, we received only her still form in a casket and the abiding place of her body is in our beautiful “God’s Acre” on the hill.

Miss Jennie Slaughter was born in Vinton, Ohio, about sixty years ago. While yet a young girl, she came to Newton and made her home with her sister, Mrs. Margaret Kennington. She taught school for a number of years and then was united in marriage to Mr. Chester Seymour, to whom she was a devoted companion until the time of his death, which occurred in 1893. After the death of her husband, she went to Canton, Illinois, and made her home with her brother, Capt P. W. Slaughter, where she remained until death came. She had not been in the best of health for some time, but her last sickness, which was pneumonia, was only of a week’s duration. She died at six o’clock, Thursday, March 7, 1901 and her body was brought to Newton, Saturday, and taken to the home of Mr. and Mr. L. S. Kennington on East Main Street. The funeral was conducted by the ladies of Margaret Rebekah Lodge No. 237, of which Mrs. Seymour was a faithful member and was held in the Congregational Church Sunday afternoon at two o’clock. Rev. Cowan delivered the funeral sermon.

Mrs. Seymour was a member of the Congregation Church and had a host of friends both in the church and lodge who will mourn her departure, for she was a woman of genial disposition, kind to her friends and neighbors, earnest in whatever she undertook.

She leaves three sisters: Mrs. Mary Martin, Greenville, Ohio; Mrs. L. A. Fee, New Virginia, lowa; and Mrs. Margaret Kennington of Newton; also two brothers: Capt. P. W. Slaughter, of Canton, Illinois, and G. W. Slaughter, of Minneapolis, Kansas. They two brothers were in attendance at the funeral. The remains were accompanied from Canton by her brother, P. W. Slaughter, and also by Chas. Martin, a nephew, and Edward Henenover, a close friend of the family. ~ The Newton Journal Wed 13 Mar 1901
