Joe W. Nichols, 72, of Newton died of renal failure Monday, May 20, at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. David Raymond officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. Wallace Family Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

No visitation is scheduled. Memorials will be accepted in his name at the funeral home.

The son of John W. and Lula B. Kimler Nichols, he was born May 18, 1930, in Newton. He was a graduate of Newton High School and the Milwaukee Art Institute in Milwaukee, Wis. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War.

Survivors include a sister, Margie Hoen, of Newton, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John S. Nichols and a brother in infancy.
