Services Held Friday For Ruth Gorgas
Ruth Gorgas, 78, a resident of Newton since 1927, died of cancer Wednesday morning, Oct. 1, at the Skiff Medical Center.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.
The Rev. Jerome Egel, pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted services. Burial was in the Newton Union cemetery.
Survivors are two daughters, Edna (Mrs. Larry) Meisner and JoAnn (Mrs. Edwin) Smith, both of Newton; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Laura Goodman and Lois (Mrs. Frank) Poortinga, both of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joseph, in 1975, and a sister Floy Gray, in 1961.
Mrs. Gorgas, a member of the UAW, Local 997, Retirees Union. she had been employed at the Maytag Co. for 22 years.
The daughter of Warren and Maggie Toom Woodyard, she was born Jan. 7, 1908 in Prairie City, was graduated from Colfax Community High School and attended Drake University in Des Moines.
she was married to Joseph James Gorgas July 23, 1927, in Colfax.
