Martin J. Gorgas Died Suddenly on Christmas Day

Funeral Services Held Tuesday Morning From Immaculate Conception Church

Martin J. Gorgas, 75, died at his home north of Colfax unexpectedly Christmas morning about 10:00 o'clock, as the children were coming to spend Christmas with their parents.
He had been in his usual health and attended the midnight mass at the Catholic church Christmas eve and had gone about his work as usual shortly before the attack.
He was born Nov. 4, 1867, in Mahr, Austria and in 1906 with his wife and two oldest children came to the United States, first settling in Pennsylvania. They became naturalized citizens soon after coming to this country. He worked at mining in Pennsylvania and at factory work in Milwaukee, Wisc., and for a time on a farm in Ohio.
The family came to Colfax some 25 years ago first settling at Seevers and later locating in the Oswalt community where farming has been his occupation.
Mr. and Mrs. Gorgas celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary last November, having been united in marriage in Austria in November, 1892.
Those who survive are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Pauline McGovern of New York City, Miss Mary Gorgas of San Francisco, California, Miss Ann Gorgas of Des Moines and six sons, Thomas Gorgas who is taking officers training at Ft Monmounth, N. J., Frank at Lockwood, O., Henry at Youngstown, O., William in Des Moines, Joe at Newton and John of Colfax, several grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning from the Immaculate Conception church with Farther D. F. Cahalan officiating.
Music was furnished by Ann Tomljanovic, Johanna Sally, Mary Guizzetti, Tom White, and Mrs. Jenny Bridie with Mrs Grace Flaherty accompanist.
Pallbearers were John Doyle, Richard Williams, Sr., Sam Bolen, Charles Mindham, and Emmon Kvasny.
The flower committee was Mrs Charles Mindham and Mrs, Emmon Kvasny.
Internment was in the Colfax Highland Cemetery.
