Wallway, Charles – 1937–2011

Charles W. “Wally” Wallway, the son of Charles Hammer and Jeanne Delamarter, was born Feb. 18, 1937 in Portland, Ore. He graduated from Grant High School in Portland and went on to get his associate degree. Wally served his country in full time service beginning in the United States Air Force in 1955 and ending his service in the United States Army in 1989.
Wally was united in marriage with Sharon Breadon on July 9, 1983, in Hillsboro, Ore. He was a former member of the Newton Optimist Club and attended Grace Church in Newton. Wally owned and operated Pet Kingdom in Newton. He enjoyed reading, cars, genealogy and anything involving the military.
Wally died on Monday, May 9, 2011, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Mo. He was 74 years old. Wally was preceded in death by his birth father, Charles Hammer; his mother, Jeanne Wallway; his adopting father, O.G. Wallway; and a sister, Annette Meier.
Those left to honor Wally’s memory include his wife, Sharon of Newton; his sons, Bryan (Sandy) Wallway of Grand Junction, Colo., and Chad Wallway of Newton, Iowa; his daughters, Audrey (Zach) Oliphant of Newton, Lisa Roberts of Tualatin, Ore., Susan (Kell) Rabern of Issaquah, Wash., and Sally (Chris) Rich of Riverside, Calif.; his 11 grandchildren, Robert Rich, Abigail Rich, Sarah Rich, Alex Rabern, Amanda Rabern, Aaron Wallway, Ryan Wallway, Melissa Wallway, Melita Trousdale, Breadon Oliphant and Brienna Oliphant; his three great-grandchildren, Chloe Trousdale, Kirra Trousdale and Makayla Trousdale; his sister, Diane (John) Mann of Portland, Ore.; his brothers, Mark (Elaine) Hammer of Baxter, Iowa, and Keith (Rita) Hammer of Bettendorf, Iowa; and his many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Friday. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. For online condolences, visit www.pencefh.com
Memorials may be designated in Wally’s name to The Wounded Warrior Project and may be left at the funeral home.
