OBITUARY

Mrs. Catherine A. Lyman was born in Raritan, New Jersey, October 8, 1825. Her early childhood was spent in New Jersey but later she removed with her parents to New York City. In 1844 she was graduated from Mount Holyoke Seminary during the early days of that institution and while Mary Lyon, its founder, was still at its head.

She came west as the wife of a Home Missionary in 1845 settling first at Delavan, Wisconsin, and later at Geneseo, Illinois. She was married twice, the second marriage to the late Rev. Addison Lyman, who was also a Home Missionary, coming to the west in 1845. Mrs. Lyman was the mother of nine children, seven of whom survive her: Mrs. Theresa Hill and Mrs. Anna Ashman, with whom she made her home in Berkeley, California, during her last years; J. Fred Lyman of Rockwell City, Iowa; Rev. Henry Lyman of Denmark, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Harvey of Denver, Colorado; Addison F. Lyman of Lilesville, North Carolina and Mrs. Wm. Camp of Glenwood, Iowa. She passed away at a good old age on December 11, 1911, 86 years, 2 months and 3 days old. Hers has been a life of loving service in the home and in the Master's work.

She has been an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact and many besides her own children "Rise up to call her Blessed." Rev. and Mrs. Lyman spent fifty-four years of their busy eventful lives together, and together they put their best efforts in the work of the Congregational church in Illinois and Iowa. Her husband preceded her to "The better land" in 1902. Her remains were laid to rest by his side at Kellogg, Iowa, Dec. 22, 1911.

She and her husband are buried in Our Silent City Cemetery, Kellogg, Jasper, Iowa, USA - Block 1 Lot 72.
