Obituary

Mrs. Zachariah M. Hammer

Passed Away at Her Home Northeast of Newton Friday, Oct. 9th

Louisa Jane, daughter of John and Nellie Tharp, both deceased, was born September 2, 1842, in Henry county, Indiana, died October 9, 1914, being at the time of her death, 72 years, 1 month, and 7 days. She came to Iowa with her parents in the year 1845, and settled west of Newton. She was united in marriage to Zachariah M. Hammer December 12, 1859. To this union were born 8 children, Rhoda A., now Mrs. Henry Osborne; Cora J., now Mrs. Robert Morris; Charles B. and Jay Hammer, all of this vicinity. She was of a family of 5 children, only 2 of whom are now living--Mary Tharp of Nimaha City, Nebraska, and Mrs. Martha Pike of Atchison, Kansas.

She was converted and joined the Methodist church in 1864, but later united with the Friends Church at Center in 1889 and lived a devoted christian life to the end. She has always been a woman who dearly loved her home and ever tried to make it the happiest home in the world. She had been in poor health for some time and was confined to her bed most of the time for the past 5 weeks, suffering seemingly more than human strength could bear, yet patiently; and her death was not unexpected by her loved ones, who had watched over her, and tenderly cared for her during her long and painful illness. Her family and friends are comforted only by the thought that she has entered into the rest that remains for the people of God.

The funeral services were held at Center Friends church Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock and conducted by Miss Rodema Mendenhall, a returned missionary from Africa, and the remains were laid to rest in Center Friends cemetery. The pallbearers were, Ed, Fred, and Glen Hammer, Artie Beals, Harry Morrison and Frank Hill.
