Sharon Schaffer, 67, of Newton died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Cheryl Palmer officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 8, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials to the Arthritis Foundation or the Skiff Medical Center OB Unit may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Homer and Wilma (Askren) Ballard, Sharon was born March 26, 1944, in Chariton, Iowa. She graduated from Chariton High School in 1962. On Sept. 24, 1966, Sharon was united in marriage to Robert Schaffer in Bauer, Iowa.
Sharon worked as a CNA for 40 years, with 20 of those years at Skiff Medical Center. She was a member of the Arthritis Foundation and Iowa Caregivers’ Association.
Sharon enjoyed flowers, gardening, cross-stitch and crocheting. She collected dolls, birds, flowers and roosters. She enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Jacob; baking cookies; and taking yearly trips to the greenhouse to pick out flowers. She lived for the Lord and her family, especially her grandson. She loved babies and was a very good cook. She was known for her red velvet cake, party potatoes and deviled eggs. She always said that inviting people to her home and cooking for them was her way of showing them love, and she was very warm and inviting to anyone who came to her home.
Sharon is survived by her husband, Robert of Newton; sons, Martin Schaffer of Newton and Jason Schaffer of Des Moines; daughter, Melissa (Roger) Gilchrist of Newton; grandson, Jacob Gilchrist of Newton; and brothers, Leo (Beth) Ballard of Corydon and Harlan (Nancy) Ballard of Mt. Pleasant.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
