George C. Ammer, son of Frederick and Katherine Ammer, was born near Monroe, Iowa, April 3, 1866 and died at his home in Monroe, April 20, 1925. His age being 59 years and 17 days.

He was married to Miss Louisa Birkenholtz, November 27th, 1888. To this union were born six children, two of which died in infancy.

The wife, three sons, Wm. F. Ammer of Chicago, Carl O. Ammer and Oscar R. Ammer, one daughter, Miss Edith Marie all of Monroe, together with one brother, Albert; four sisters, Mrs. Adam Herwehe, Mrs. C. L. Hipsley, Mrs. S. O. Garrett and Mrs. Elton Worth, of Monroe survive.

Mr. Ammer was reared in the Lutheran church, but with his wife, some thirty years ago, united with the Fairmount Baptist church, later (unreadable) with the Monroe church of the same faith, of which he remained faithful member until death.

He was also an honor member of the Ancient order of Free Masonary.

With the exception of a period of four years spent in Wisconsin, Mr. Ammer has been a resident of Monroe since his birth.

He was in the hardware business in Monroe from 1908 to 1916 and from 1922 to 1925. He served the town of Monroe as councilman and at the time of his death was Mayor, having been elected to that office March 1924.

The funeral procession was one of the largest that has ever been witnessed in Monroe.

The church was filled to overflowing and the overflow was seated in the park across from the church.

In the funeral procession to the cemetery there were forty-two cars in the line. The attendance is said to have been one of the largest ever seen in Monroe.
