Vern Norman Hanna, 92, of Colfax died Saturday, April 2, 2011, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial following at Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 6, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the church. There will be a rosary recited at 5:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., both at the church. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The son of James E. and Eva (Pieart) Hanna, Vern was born on February 25, 1919, in Colfax, Iowa. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1937. Vern served in the United States Navy during WWII. On May 28, 1944, he was untied in marriage to Mary Ruth Hartnett at the Howard Street Christian Church. Vern took classes at night at Drake University and was three credits shy of receiving his degree. He worked as a payroll clerk at Maytag for 37 years, retiring in 1986. Vern was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially mushroom hunting and bird watching.
Those left to honor his memory include his three children, Barbara and Mike Hanna of Colfax, and George Patrick Hanna of Louisiana; three grandchildren, Jason, Elizabeth, and James and two great grandchildren, Ashley and Samantha. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife in 2003, and four brothers, George, Mark, Roy, and Frank and four sisters, Caroline, Esther, Kathryn, and Mary.
