Walter (Walt) Ambrose Druyff, 86, of Newton, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 1, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at the funeral home. Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or Metz Church may be left at the funeral home.
Walt was born Aug. 19, 1924, on a farm Southeast of Kellogg, Iowa. He was the son of Arris and Olive (Brawner) Druyff. He attended rural school and then Newton Senior High School for two years. Then his family moved to Castelberry, Ala., where he finished school.
Walt worked in the shipyards in Mobile, Ala., and worked several years for the Maytag Company. In 1950, he married Nora Maye Schumann, moved to a farm south of Baxter and farmed for 30 years.
Walt raised purebred Black Angus and was a former member of the Angus Association and a member of the Farm Bureau. Walt served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had served aboard the USS Iowa, two Liberty Ships — the SS James Ferguson and the SS George P. McKey. He was also a member of the USS Iowa Veterans’ Association, the U.S. Navy Armed Guard Association, the American Legion, and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was also a plank owner at the World War II Memorial and the U.S. Navy Memorial, both in Washington, D.C.
Walt moved to Newton in 1974 and worked for the Newton Schools for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nora in 2009; a son, Don C. Druyff; sister, Peggy; brother, Doran; and a brother and sister in infancy.
Those left to honor Walt’s memory include his son, John Druyff (Nancy Palmer) of Newton; grandson, Michael Druyff (Danielle Lester) of Newton; two sisters, Jean Blessing of Woodland, Wash., and Alta Donoldson of Burlington, Vt.; and a brother, Arris Druyff Jr. of Ault, Colo.
