Our whole neighborhood was greatly shocked, Monday morning, by the sad news that Mr. Atchison was dead. Several had met with him in Monroe on Saturday and he appeared to be in usual health; and when this sudden news reached them, could scarcely realize that he was gone. Monday morning about 2 o’clock his wife heard a strange sound as of some one choking and rising found her husband struggling for breath. She quickly summoned her family but before they reached his bedside his spirit had fled, heart disease being the trouble. Mr. Atchison was one of the oldest settlers, having come here in early days and settled down where they now live, and made a comfortable home for his family. He was highly respected and was known to be honest and straightforward in every transaction. His wife and family have the sympathy of the whole community in their sad bereavement. ~ The Newton Record, Friday, March 20, 1896, Page 6, Column 2 – Pleasant Hill
