Death of A. C. Shropshire
Mrs. Loretta Shropshire received the very sad news last Saturday that her husband, Mr. Alex C. Shropshire, had died at his old home near Paris, Kentucky, on Monday, January 20th. His disease was pneumonia, and he was only sick a short time. It was a great shock to Mrs. Shropshire, as she had not known of her husband’s illness until the letter came telling of his death.
Mr. Shropshire’s age was 61 or 62 years. He was a native of Kentucky, having been born, and the greater part of his life spent in the neighborhood of Parish, where his death occurred. On the 6th of December 1876 – nineteen years ago – he was united in marriage with Mrs. Loretta Long, of this county, and immediately settled here, where their home has been ever since. A few months ago Mr. S. returned to visit again his old home and the scenes of his boyhood in Kentucky, and was still there when death’s summons reached him. He was a member of the Christian Church, and had been since his early manhood, and united with the Newton church under the ministry of Pres. Aylesworth. He was a typical southern gentleman – politeness itself, generous to a fault, and ever ready to extend a helping hand, if in his power, to a fellow being in need of assistance. Many hearts in Newton will be filled with sorrow by the news of his death. Within the past few week’s two brothers of Mr. Shropshire had also died of pneumonia.~ The Newton (IA) Record, Friday, January 24, 1896, Page 1, Column 5
