Death of Mother Ryan

Col. David Ryan left Newton Monday morning for Lincoln, Nebraska, called thither by a telegram announcing the death of his aged mother, Mrs. Barbara Ryan, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jasper Deweese, in Lincoln, on Saturday, February 8th. Over thirty-eight years ago, Mrs. Ryan came from New York to Jasper County with her husband, Mr. Lewis Ryan, and settled on a farm south of Prairie City, where Mr. Ryan died many years ago. For several years past she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Jasper Deweese, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She had been the mother of ten children, eight of whom are living: John and George Ryan and Mrs. Maggie Wood, of Prairie City; Robert and Thomas Ryan and Mrs. J. W. Died - at Lincoln, Nebraska, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jasper Deweese, on Saturday, Feb. 8th 1896, Mrs. Barbara Ryan, aged 85 years and 17 days.

Barbara McKeachie was born in Scotland on the 21st day of January, 1811. While yet a child she came to New York with her parents, where she grew up to womanhood and married Lewis Ryan. The most of their married life was spent on a farm in Washington County, New York, till the spring of 1856, when they removed with their family of ten children, to a farm two miles south of Prairie City. The husband and father died in January, 1861. Since his decease Mrs. Barbara Ryan has lived mostly with her daughter Elizabeth - part of the time in Jasper County and part in Lincoln, Neb.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church from girlhood; and led a quiet and unostentatious life, devoted almost entirely to her family. She enjoyed remarkably good health until about a month before her death; and retained all her faculties up to the last moment. She expressed her willingness to go and departed as one falling asleep. It was as a life completed.

Her children who are living are: -- John and George Ryan and Mrs. Maggie Wood, of Prairie City; Robert and Thomas Ryan and Mrs. Jasper Deweese, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Judge David Ryan, of this city.
