Well Known Newton Woman Dies at Residence Early Yesterday Morning From Tumor
After an illness of more than a year, Mrs. Will S. Ferguson died at her home on North Second avenue West, at 4 o'clock Sunday morning. The cuase of her death was tumor. She was 64 years old.
Jane Hanson, daughter of Thomas and Jane Hanson was born in Birmingham, England, October 21, 1853. A few years after her birth her father came to America, coming direct to Newton and August 4th, 1869, he sent for his family. Jane Hanson was then 16 years old. October 22, 1871, she was united in marriage to William S. Ferguson and to this union were born five children, Clara Elsie, who died in infancy, Miss Ida, who is at home, Mrs. Will Redell of Marshalltown, Mrs. James Jorgenson and Will H. Hanson of Newton. Besides her children, her husband, four sisters and three brothers survives. The sisters are Mrs. John Cleasby of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Thos. Smith and Mrs. James Lister of this city, and Mrs. John Black of England. The brothers are Thomas, of LaCenter, Wash.; Arthur of Lambert, Okla; and an adopted brother, Henry Herrington, of Colfax. Mrs. Ferguson was one of fifteen children. She was a member of the local Lutheran church and took an active part in all church work until failing health made it impossible for her to attend. She was until a year ago a member of the Newton Rebekah lodge.
Funeral services will be held from the Lutheran church Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Rev. R. B. Helser, pastor of the Christian church, will have charge of the services. Burial will be made in the Newton cemetery. ~ The Newton Daily News, July 30, 1917.
