Samson, Gerrit D. – 1935–2011

Gerrit Donald Samson, the son of Gerrit and Ethel (Scarbrough) Samson, was born Feb. 16, 1935, in Kellogg, Iowa. He was baptized in the Community Church in Sully. He attended rural Prairie City Schools. After school he began farming in the Prairie City area.
On April 1, 1954, Donald was united in marriage to Geraldine Rozenboom at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton. After their marriage, Donald began farming with his brother Robert in Knoxville. Later Donald and Geraldine moved to Colfax to raise their family and farm. In 1988, they moved to Newton. Following Geraldine’s death, Donald was married to Sharon Collins Hobbs on July 4, 1995, on a family farm in rural Newton. More recently, Donald has been driving bus and doing grounds keeping for the Newton Community School District.
Donald was a charter member of the former Community Reformed Church, where he was active. Donald enjoyed working on the farm and driving the bus. He loved spending time with his family, reading his Bible, working on his tractors and cars, gardening and playing his harmonica and banjo.
Donald went to live with his lord on March 11, 2011, at the age of 76. Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Sharon Samson of rural Newton; two daughters, Vickie (Jeff) Farver of Newton and Beverly (Rick) Modlin of Shakopee, Minn.; his two sons, Rick (Tootie) Samson of Baxter and Brian (Sherry) Samson of Baxter; three step-sons, David (Staci) Hobbs, Donny (Melissa) Hobbs and Danny Hobbs, all of Newton; his 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his brother, Bob Samson of rural Newton; aunt, Mardelle Minear of Des Moines; and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Geraldine.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 14, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Memorials in Donald’s name may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.
