Jerry Blain, 61, of Newton died Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials to the dialysis unit at Skiff Medical Center may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Don and Mary (Arganbright) Blain, Jerry was born Oct. 31, 1949, in Oskaloosa. He graduated from Keota High School in 1968 and the Culinary School at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. On Nov. 7, 1970, he was united in marriage to Vickie Meldrem in Grinnell.
Jerry was a Chef at Cuevo De Fuego at the Terrace Inn in Newton and then opened Little Anthony’s at the Newton Inn. He later worked in the factory at Maytag for 20 years, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League and the UAW Local 997.
Jerry enjoyed rock and roll music, old country western movies, cars, flying kites and cooking. He also was a devoted dad and grandpa, never missing an activity or event. Jerry and Vickie also had done catering in the area. He had lived in Newton since 1977.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Vickie Blain of Newton; daughter, Summer (Matt) Guy of Newton; son, T.J. (Amie) Blain of Oskaloosa; grandchildren, Taylor, Tanner and Tyler Guy; brother, Joe Blain of Fairfield; half-sister, Theresa Blain; half-brother, Mark Blain; aunt, Twyla Murphy of Silvis, Ill.; brother-in-law, Brady (Julie) Meldrem of Ottumwa; father-in-law, Max Meldrem of Grinnell; sister-in-law, Becky (Keith) Harvey of Ames; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Donna Sue Blain; brother-in-law, Dave Meldrem; and mother-in-law, Rosetta Meldrem.
