Richard A. Goodman, 82, of Newton, formerly of Baxter, died on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing.
A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery in Baxter. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home.
Richard, the son of Andrew and Henrietta (Vanderoh) Goodman, was born on Feb. 11, 1929, in Melbourne. He grew up in Baxter and graduated from Baxter High School. Richard served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War time. He was united in marriage with Sandra Reynolds on June 28, 1954, in Haverhill. They made their home on a farm by Haverhill before moving back to the Baxter area in 1965. Richard was a lifelong farmer, farming in both Haverhill and Baxter. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Knights of Columbus in Marshalltown and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton.
Those left to honor Richard’s memory are his wife, Sandra Goodman of Newton; five daughters, Jan (Gary) Chamberlain of Newton, Jill (Carroll) Simbro of Newton, Jody (Jeff) Meyers of Ames, Julie (Doug) Montrose of Naperville, Ill., and Joyce (Greg) Christianson of Baxter; his 10 grandchildren, Kristopher (Tonia) Flora, Rachel Flora, Sam and Madalyn Simbro, Courtney and Cody Christianson, Alyssa and Haley Meyers, and Ashley and Matthew Montrose; two great-grandchildren, Danika and Devin Flora; and his three sisters, Lorraine Forret of Sheldon, Charlotte Flora of Baxter and Jean Rhodes of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brother-in-laws and a nephew.
