Funeral of Major S. G. Smith

Seldom has there been so large a number of our people in attendance at a funeral as were present at that of Major S. G. Smith on last Thursday afternoon. The large and commodious residence was filled to overflowing, and many could not obtain admission. The services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Lewis and Rev. C.C. Harrah and the remarks of the latter paid a fitting compliment to the deceased for his many virtues and was full of sympathy and comfort to the bereaved ones.
The floral offerings were many, appropriate and very beautiful. After the ceremonies at the house, a very large number followed the remains to our beautiful cemetery, where all that was mortal of Major Smith were laid at rest.

Mrs. Smith and family, deeply feel their obligations to friends and neighbors, for their many acts of kindness and sympathy extended them during the long sickness of the deceased.

Death of Major Smith – Bar Meeting

On Thursday forenoon, the District Court, which is now in session, took action in regard to the death of Major Smith.
On motion of Judge Winslow a committee of three was appointed to present appropriate resolutions of respect to his memory. At 11 o’clock the committee came into court, and through their chairman, A. Clark, reported the following resolutions:

Whereas, it has pleased an all-wise Providence to remove from our midst, Sherman G. Smith, for many years a member of the Jasper County bar, therefore be it resolved: That the Jasper County bar looses by his death, an honorable, upright and respected member, his family, a kind and indulgent husband and father, and the community a valued and enterprising citizen.
Resolved; further, that we tender to his bereaved family our kindly sympathy in this their hour of trial, and assure them that during his long and distressing illness he has retained the respect and had the sympathy of his former associates.
Resolved; further, that we request the jasper District Court, now in session, to adjourn this day out of respect to his memory, and that a copy of these resolutions be ordered spread at large upon the records of this court; that a copy thereof, be furnished the family of the deceased, and a copy for publication to each of the Newton papers.
Resolved; further, that the court, the members of the Jasper County bar, and officers of the court attend his funeral services in a body.

Mrs. Smith was Louisa Jane Dixon, the daughter of Robert and Addilla (Helphrey) Dixon.
