Death Claims an Old Settler
Mr. H. F. Pahre died at his home near Galesburg, Saturday, September 15, 1900. Deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, August 26, 1820, emigrated to America in 1845, locating in St. Louis. He enlisted in the 3rd Missouri mounted Volunteers for the Mexican War and was in the battle of Vera Cruz. He was honorably discharged in 1848, and returned to Germany, where he remained a short time, returning to America, and going to California during the gold excitement in 1849. He engaged in mining and stayed until 1854. The same year he came to Iowa and purchased the land in Jasper County, which has been his home ever since. He was married in St. Louis, in 1854, to Wilhemia Bartreak. Seven children were born to them. The funeral was held yesterday.Source: Newton Journal; Sept. 19, 1900
