COLFAX — Harold Leroy “Sonny” Thompson, 84, of Colfax died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, in Arizona.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax, with burial following at Colfax Cemetery. The family will greet friends following the burial at a luncheon at the United Methodist Church. Memorials may be directed to the Colfax United Methodist Church or the Colfax Senior Center, and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The son of Harold Thompson and Florence June (Williams) Chambers, Sonny was born on Jan. 6, 1927, in Colfax. He graduated from Colfax High School. Following graduation, Sonny was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. On Dec. 7, 1947, he was united in marriage to Freda L. Brunk at the Methodist Church in Colfax. Sonny worked at Maytag in Newton at Plant 2 Dryer Assembly, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Colfax United Methodist Church. He also was recognized as a 60-year member of the Colfax American Legion, was a past president of the Colfax Kiwanis Club, was a member of the Maytag Management Club and was active in fundraisers and other activities during his time in Arizona. Sonny loved to go dancing with Freda. He also enjoyed playing golf, bowling and gardening and was an avid reader. Family vacations were also something Sonny enjoyed.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 63 years, Freda of Arizona; his children, Deanna (Jerry) Bell of Des Moines, Edwin (Sue) Thompson of Ft. Mitchell, Ky., and James (Diane) Thompson of Des Moines; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Komar of New York; and two brothers, Robert Thompson and James Thompson, both of New Jersey.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Kenneth Thompson.
