Virgil D. Swaim, 76, of Newton died on Monday, January 3, 2011 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.
The family will greet friends at the Moose Lodge immediately following the memorial service with a lunch.
A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials in Virgil’s name may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors include his daughter, Christine (Larry) Crew of Pella; four grandchildren, Ryan Crew of Pella, Martin Wells of Dandridge, Tennessee, Shelly Vermer of Knoxville, and Danny Crew of Centerville; great-grandson, Desmond “Diss” Col-Wells; his brother, John (Rhonda) Swaim of Osceola; his two sisters, Loretta Smith of Pleasantville, and Esther (Jay) Hunt of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorraine in 2008 and brother-in-law, Carroll Smith.

Virgil D. Swaim was born February 19, 1934 to Orris E. and Junia I. (Alderman) Swaim.
Virgil served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
Virgil was a graduate of Collins High School in Collins, Iowa in 1952.
Virgil was a production worker for the Maytag Company for many years prior to his retiring. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #923.
