=======================================

Joseph W. Knapp, who died at his home in this city last Monday, was aged nearly sixty years. His fatal malady was of a peculiar nature and resulted from injuries received while a soldier in the Union army. He was almost a constant sufferer and his eldest son was his contant companion and nurse. His life history is included in his birth in Sandusky, Ohio, his coming to Iowa in 1854 with his father and settlement in Story county; these followed in 1858 by his removal to Monroe in this county. Subsequently, in 1860, he removed to Iowaville, Van Buren county, where, in 1861, he enlisted as a member of Company H, 5th Iowa Infantry and served with the same till the muster out, July 30, 1864. During his term of service he participated in twelve engagements and his regiment also marched 2,000 miles, and his record was that of a brave and faithful soldier. The injuries on account of which he was granted an invalid pension were received at Champion Hills and at the seige of Vicksburg. In 1864 on his return from the army he located in Jasper county which has ever since been his home, except three years he resided in Marion county. He was married to Helen S. Sheperd in 1866, but she passed away in 1876. In 1882 he married Caroline Weasel, but she died in 1895. He was a member of the M. E. church from boyhood to 1876, when he was united with the Christian church, and was always thereafter an exemplary member. He leaves three daughters and two sons to mourn the loss of a loving and indulgent father. His funeral was from the Howard street church last Wednesday morning, Rev. Popplewell officiating, and his remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife in the Kintz cemetery, south of Clyde.
