Funeral services were held today for William N. Munford, 86, of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, formerly of 1105 E. 14th St. S. in Newton, at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.
The Rev. Jerry Doellinger, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church, officiated. Burial was at Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association will be accepted.
Mr. Munford died of complications of Alzheimer’s disease Friday, May 8, at the Veteran’s Home.
The son of William Burk and Nellie Neville Munford, he was born Aug. 15, 1911, in Burkeville, Va. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1931. He married Wanda Scheel April 2, 1939, in Story City.
A resident of Newton since the 1950s, he also resided in Nevada and Madrid.
Mr. Munford was employed by the retail food business. He was a member of the Newton VFW Post No. 1655 and the Newton American Legion Post No. 111. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda of Newton; a brother, Edwin of Saco, Main; four sisters, Virginia Munford, Alice Barber, Billie Burton and Lucille Griffin, all of Durham, N.C.; a nephew, Vee Spinks of Bowling Green, Ky.; and a sister-in-law, Helen Spinks.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
