Gladys M. Weaver of Newton died on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton and will be followed immediately by a lunch and celebration of Gladys’ life at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
The daughter of Agnes and Henry Marinus was born May 7, 1921, in Monroe, Iowa. She graduated from Prairie City High School in 1938 and attended AIB Community College in 1939. She was married to Verne F. Weaver in 1941. After her education, Gladys held a wide variety of jobs, working first at the Maytag Company. During World War II, she worked at Hoxie Fruit and the U.S. Army Base in Fort Eustis, Va. After the war, she worked for the Winpower Corporation, Holland Plastic Co. and Newton Sheet Metal.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Jasper County Historical Society, Newton Golden K Kiwanis, Newton Lady Elks and the Newton Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association.
She is survived by a daughter, Valerie Davenport (Brad) of West Des Moines; two grandchildren and their families, Eric Davenport (Marianne) of Solon, Madison and Dylan and Melinda Munson (Corey) of Sioux City and Andrew, Taylor and Jordan. She is also survived by two sisters, Darlene Head of Pleasant Hill and Iola VanGorp of Leighton; a sister-in-law, Ethel Studham; a brother-in-law, Fred Weaver; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Verne Weaver; parents, Agnes and Henry Marinus; brother, Wayne Marinus; and companion, Richard Vonk.
