The son of Belle and Samuel Kingery, Laurence was born June 12, 1913, in Percy, Iowa. He attended Pleasant Valley School at Red Rock and tended the family farm after graduating. Laurence served in the Navy from Nov. 23, 1942, to Nov. 16, 1945, as a naval electrician. While stationed in Chicago, he met his wife Isabell (Bell) roller-skating, and they married Jan. 1, 1944. After being honorably discharged, Laurence moved his family back to Monroe, Iowa, opening his own TV and radio repair shop first and then working 27 years as an electrician at the Maytag Corporation before retiring Aug. 31, 1977.
Laurence was member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe and served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and member of the Bell Choir. He delivered Meals on Wheels to the elderly and served on Monroe’s Zoning board. Laurence loved his family and horticulture as well as woodworking, genealogy, fishing, hunting and going to auctions. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed working outdoors with his flowers, fruits, vegetables and trees. When the weather kept him inside, he could be found taking care of his indoor plants and pouring over the newest seed catalogues, figuring out his plans for next year’s garden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Bell; his son Russell (Rusty); two brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by three sons and four daughter-in-laws, Marlys Kingery of Plymouth, Minn., Ray and Dale Kingery of Iowa City, Ronald “Skip” and Virg Kingery of Des Moines and Roger and Lynette Kingery of Earlham; one daughter and son-in-law, Cookie and Steve Eckard of Earlham; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
