Gerald M. “Gar” Doane, 86, of Newton died Monday, July 19, 2010, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Pastor John Patterson of Community Heights Alliance Church officiating.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials to the Community Heights Alliance Church Building Fund or Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Arthur B. and Hazel (Brece) Doane, Gar was born Aug. 1, 1923, in rural Newton. He graduated from Kellogg High School in 1942 and was united in marriage to Alberta M. Farland on Nov. 15, 1942, in Bethany, Mo.

Gar worked for the Maytag Company for 42 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1985. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an active member of Community Heights Alliance Church, the Last Man’s Club and American Legion Post 111. He was also a member of the Maytag Management Club and had been in charge of the Primetime Group at Community Heights Alliance Church.

Gar had a strong creative ability. He was very inventive and could work with a variety of materials to come up with solutions. He was a lifelong resident of the Kellogg and Newton areas.

Gar is survived by his wife, Bert Doane of Newton; a son, Marty (Cheri) Doane of Pella; a daughter, Lea Ann (Kevin) Duncan of Charles City; four grandchildren, Emily (Dan) Kainz of Des Moines, Andy (Jana) Heiting-Doane of Des Moines, Andrea (Emery) Dickman of Allison and David Lloyd of Charles City; three great-grandchildren, Dominick Kainz, Olivia Kainz and Martin Heiting-Doane; and a brother, Sam Doane of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mildred; and brothers, Roy and Don.
