MONROE — Rodger Norman Lewis was born on March 8, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa, and died on July 18, 2010, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, Iowa, at the age of 79 years.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church, with burial following at Silent City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Coburn Funeral Home with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Monroe Emergency Unit or the Monroe United Methodist Church, and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
He was the son of Thelma (Jarnagin) and William Lewis of Monroe, Iowa. Rodger was privileged to live his entire life on his family’s Century Farm, first as a child, then working the farm and also raising his own family there. He attended a rural country school and was a 1949 graduate of Monroe High School. In 1951, he was united in marriage to Gwyneth Bump at the Monroe United Methodist Church, of which they were both members. To this union five children were born: Elaine Claire, Jeffrey Alan, Amy Ruth, Ned Lowell and Marty Lynn. They were the joy of his life. Patience, endurance, understanding and consideration for others were the core of his living.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Deal and Catherine Lewis and Oakley and Lorinda Jarnagin; his father; Uncle Martin Lewis; Aunt Eva Shewmaker; Cousin Vivian Jarnagin; three brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law. His survivors include his mother; his wife; his children, Elaine and Don Keuning, Jeff and Lana Lewis, Amy and Ed Barton, Ned and Connie Lewis and Marty and Joyce Lewis; his grandchildren, Sara and Rusty Umbarger, Jay and Amitie Keuning, Jared and Katie Keuning, Nola Lewis, Dereck and Jenny Lewis, Chad Barton, Jason Barton, Nicholas Lewis, Kaitlyn and Mason Lewis; his great-grandchildren, Mallory and Reid Umbarger, Elise and Tanner Keuning, Jack, Ella, and James Keuning, Kaleb Engle, Taylor, Hailey and Mackenzie Barton; three sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.
