Jo Ann Emmack, 71, of Monroe died Friday, July 9, 2010, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, at the Monroe United Methodist Church with burial following at Silent City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Coburn Funeral Home of Monroe with the family present to greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m.

She had been hospitalized at Iowa Lutheran Hospital on the early morning of July 4th after several weeks of declining health. She suffered an apparent cardiac arrest in the early morning hours of July 5th while at Lutheran, was resuscitated, and put on life support for several days. She did not recover and was transferred to Taylor House Hospice on July 8th before passing on to be with her Lord the next day, surrounded by her close family. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church with burial following at Silent City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Coburn Funeral Home of Monroe from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Monroe Recreation Park or to the Monroe Fire Department, where her father volunteered for more than 50 years. Jo was born on May 29, 1939 in Des Moines, the only child of Con and Mary Garland of Monroe. She was raised all her young life in Monroe, spent about 14 years in Des Moines after high school, another 5 years near Osceola, before returning to Monroe in 1979 where she lived until her death. Jo graduated from Monroe High School in 1957 where she was a cheerleader on the football and basketball teams, and a member of her high school Yearbook and Journalism staffs. After graduating, she was united in marriage to Charles Emmack of Newton, Iowa at the Monroe United Methodist Church on November 1, 1955. Jo and Charles had 2 children, Todd, who graduated from Clarke of Osceola High School in 1981, and younger brother Shawn, who graduated from Monroe High School in 1987.
Jo was employed in Des Moines as a bank teller in Des Moines at Brenton Bank, was a homemaker while the children were young, and later worked for Furnace Electric in Osceola and Pella Rollscreen Corporation, for 21 years in Pella, Iowa. She retired from Pella Corp in 2001 to care for her father Con after her mother Mary passed away that same year. She was a very quiet, devoted, caring and unselfish woman, and was a great comfort to her father during that time. Jo’s interests and hobbies included roller and ice skating as a youngster, tennis, golf, and in later years, took interests in cooking, listening to various genres of music, coffee time with her close friends in Monroe, summer bus trips throughout Iowa, watching horse races at Prairie Meadows, and spending time each winter visiting son Shawn in the South. Jo was a member of the United Methodist Church in Monroe.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Con and Mary Garland and son Todd. She will be dearly missed by her remaining son, Shawn of Germantown, TN.
Memorials may be given to the Monroe Recreation Park or Monroe Emergency Unit.
