Dear Friends,
We’re writing to let you know that our beloved Betty Carder joined her Lord Sunday morning, June 27, 2010, at 4:23 a.m. She had an aggressive form of brain cancer. The onset was quick and her death was peaceful in the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
Betty was born on November 7, 1927, in Washington, D.C. She was the second of four children. She was also an adventurous soul, and followed her mother, brother and sister to Iowa in 1973. She settled in Newton, where she lived for many years with her mother Rachel. Betty also found the love of her life in Iowa. She married Richard “Dick” Carder in the summer of ‘74, and remained with him and later cared for him until his own death from throat cancer in June of 1989.
While Betty loved yard work and gardening and all those little tasks involved with maintaining her home, she decided to move to McCann Village in 1993. She frequently described the retirement community as offering “some of the best times of my life.” Betty was a fixture at McCann for 17 years, where she had many friends and helped with custodial work, gardening, decorations and party service.
No matter where she lived, Betty’s frank, outlandish sense of humor was her hallmark.
Those who remain to honor Betty’s memory include her brother, Francis Sullivan and his wife, Janice; Betty’s children, JoAnn Shadley, Diane Reed, Barbara Ann, and Greg Loder and his wife, Rhonda. Grandchildren who will remember Betty include JoAnn’s sons, Eddie, Terry and Marc; Diane’s daughter, Kerri and sons, James and Christopher; and Greg’s daughter, Amanda. She was also blessed with numerous great-grandchildren. She leaves behind Kelly Yenger, her dear friend whom she has loved like a daughter, her husband, Terry and their children, Jeremy and Tara.
In her last days, Betty was preparing for a happy reunion with her husband, Dick, her daughter, Catherine Louise who died at birth, her sister, Anna Hopwood, her brother, Edward Sullivan and her mother, Rachel.
We welcome all who would like to celebrate Betty Carder’s life to join us at the Wallace Family Funeral Home for visitation on Saturday, July 3, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 11 a.m. Pastor Gary Marzolf of the First United Methodist Church will be officiating. Those who loved Betty know she was a flashy dresser who loved big, beautiful jewelry. We’re sure she would be honored if you’d remember her by wearing bright colors and festive jewels. No black, please. Memorials can be made in Betty’s memory to the Salvation Army, Hospice of Jasper County or to the First United Methodist Church and may be left at the funeral home.
