Minnie Jo McClelland, 83, of Mason City, formerly of Newton, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at Union Cemetery in Newton with Pastor Audrey Young officiating. A celebration of life and fellowship with the family will be at 11:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, 501 E. 19th St. N. in Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Minnie Jo McClelland Memorial Fund in care of the family, 6 Farmstead Square, Mason City, IA 50401, or the Newton Public Library or Hospice of North Iowa.
Minnie “Jo” McClelland was born July 17, 1926, in rural Otley, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Adams) Muilenburg. She attended and graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1944. She also attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a teaching degree in 1946. She taught country school for a period of time in Pella, Iowa. She worked as a bookkeeper for Sanders Motor Sales in Newton before going to work at the Heritage Care Center in Newton as an assistant administrator until her retirement in 1991.
Jo had a passion for reading and had her own personal library, loved art and classical music, traveling and was a strong avid supporter of Iowa Public Television and Radio. She was a member of Pleasant View Methodist Church, TTT and also Page Turners Book Club in Newton. Jo will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughters, Nicki Bleakney and husband John of Mason City, Ann Haakinson and husband Curt of Vermillion, S.D., and Ronna DeNato of Marshalltown, Iowa; grandchildren, Matt (Katina) Bleakney of Manly, Iowa, Adam (Laura) Bleakney of Savoy, Ill., Atlanta (Charlie) Meynier of Vail, Colo., Samantha Haakinson of Vermillion, S.D., C.J. Haakinson of Vermillion, S.D., Josh (Amy) DeNato of Marshalltown, Iowa, Jordan DeNato of Marshalltown, Iowa, Ashley (Chip) Brown of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Heather DeNato of Marshalltown, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Carter, Graham, Ryan, Tayte, Harper, Cole, Jeep, Berkley and Price; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Othella; and her brother, Jim.
