Henry D'Reus Dies Today

Long-Time Jasper County resident succumbs At Home; Rites Monday

PRAIRIE CITY - Henry De Reus, 79, retired Jasper County farmer, succumbed at his home in Prairie City at 3:30 a. m. today after a four-week illness with arteriosclerosis.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:00 o'clock at the residence and at 1:30 p.m. at the First reformed Church in Prairie City. The Rev. Edward Huilbregtse, pastor of the church, will officiate and interment will be in the Prairie City cemetery.

Born Oct. 15, 1865, in Marion County, Iowa, he was one of 15 children of the late Arie and Grace (Bruggeman) De Reus.

On Feb. 21, 1894, he was united in marriage to Nellie Steenhoek, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gysbert Steenhoek. the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with an open house to friends and relatives last year, Mr. De Reus being the third in his father's family to observe his 50th wedding date.

Following their marriage they resided on farms near Pella and Otley, Ia., until the spring of 1913 when they moved to their farm home just north of Prairie City, where they resided for 30 years prior to their retirement in October, 1943. Mr. De Reus had just recently sold his farm.

Surviving in addition to his widow are seven children, two daughters, Mrs. William Campbell of Boston, Mass., who will be unable to return for the rites, and Mrs. Arthur Van der Leest of Fort Madison, Ia., and Five sons, Gysbert, Arie H. and Hubert of Prairie City, Henry of Colfax and Willie of Mitchellville; also four brothers; A. A. De Reus of Newton, Peter De Reus of Valeria, William De Reus of Denver, Colo., and Marinus De Reus of Des Moines; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Van Der Pol of Oskaloosa, Ia., and Mrs. William Honnold of Lorimor, Ia., and 13 grand children.

Mr. De Reus was a member of the Daily News Three-Quarter Century Club. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News January 1945
