Funeral For John Stokes, 67, Held October 24

Funeral services for John Stokes, 67, who succumbed at the Skiff Memorial Hospital Sunday, Oct. 21, of asthma and heart trouble were held Oct. 24 at Murdoch Chapel at 1 o’clock.

The Rev. Clyde McDonald officiated and interment was in the Albia cemetery. Mrs. Maurice Rodgers sang “Face to Face” and “Abide With Me” accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Jackson. Pallbearers were: Tom Stokes, Dan Stokes, Philip Stokes, James Stokes, Robert Stokes and Ralph Hart.

John Stokes was the son of John and Mary Ann Stokes and was born at Staffordshire, England, Oct. 29, 1877. He was baptized into the Church of England when a small child.

He moved with his parents to the United States when he was eight and they settled in Iowa. He was united in marriage to Gertrude Burk at Lucas, Iowa, on Aug. 22, 1905 and after living in Illinois for a few years the couple moved to Hiteman, Iowa, where five children were born. Two died in infancy.

The family moved to Newton about 10 years ago and Mr. Stokes was employed for the past three years at the Parsons Company.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude and three children, Keith B. of Independence, Mo.; Jack C. of Newton, who just returned from 34 months in the South West Pacific, and Mrs. Doris Madge Hensley of Independence, Mo.

He is also survived by six brothers and two sisters, William of California; James of Detroit; Thomas, Philip and Dan of near Bussey; Robert of Attica; and Mrs. Olive Jones of Albia; and Mrs. Lucy Hart of near Bussey. There are three grandchildren surviving, Karlene, Karna and Ralph Wayne, all of Independence. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 3, 1945
